6 June to 30 August 2026

The hundred and twenty five photographs Avedon took in the American West between 1979 and 1984: miners, ranchers and prisoners, against the white backdrop he used for film stars. It caused a scandal: that America looked nothing like the cowboy myth.

History Doesn't Repeat Itself, but It Does Rhyme. Dumile Feni: African Guernica

25 March to 22 September 2026

Guernica set against the African Guernica that South African artist Dumile Feni drew in 1967, under apartheid. Not a large show, but worth the detour if you have seen the Picasso and want to look at it differently.

Carmen Laffón. Variations

23 June to 27 September 2026

Seventy seven works by Carmen Laffón (1934-2021), who returned to the same subjects years apart: the Doñana wetlands, still lifes from her own house. A timed slot is required, and summer weekends without one mean queueing.

13 July to 4 October 2026

Eight scenes of Spanish popular life painted by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer’s younger brother in 1866 and 1867, shown complete for the first time. Room 60 is small: twenty minutes, best folded into a longer Prado visit.

More than 150 objects on loan from the British Museum on the last great Assyrian king, who assembled one of history’s first libraries at Nineveh. A solid archaeological show, more text than spectacle: allow ninety minutes.

Felix Gonzalez-Torres: Sweet Revenge

27 May to 12 October 2026

Over fifty works by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, who died of AIDS in 1996: carpets of sweets and stacks of paper made to be taken away and used up by visitors, not kept under glass. The museum has extended it into metro stations.
